LOOKING FOR A LAST-MINUTE END-OF-SUMMER GETAWAY?

By Sam McDade-Wray, Highlands Ranch-Parker-Castle Rock-Lone Tree Publisher August 23, 2016
Summer starts late here in Colorado. We love to take advantage of the last weekends in August for one final summer hurrah with a trip to the mountains before the snow hits!

We've already spent a lot of time this summer on bikes and hikes so we were delighted to be invited as guests at the Breck Summer Fun Park last weekend. With warm days and cooler nights, the mountains are great for end-of-summer activities and you can not beat the two-hour drive!

We love Breckenridge because of its wide variety of activities and amenities. It is also very central to other mountain towns too like Vail, Beaver Creek, and even Glenwood Springs for a day trip.

Getting to the Fun Park is easy. You can take the gondola in town up to Peak 8 for free. There is a ticket booth at the base, but you can also purchase tickets online. The Fun Park has several different options that allow a family to enjoy the park based on their specific interests and budget. The smaller packages work well for younger kids.

Scout Pass: $36 (Ages 3+) Six activities including Climbing Wall, Bungee Trampoline, Mini Golf, Bounce House, Maze, Scenic Chairlift, and one trip through Gemstone Panning.

Explorer Pass: $42 (Ages 3-6)/$63 (Ages 7+) Nine activities including the Gold Runner Coaster (1 ride), Alpine Slide (1 ride), Kids' Ropes Course, Kids' Zip Line, Kids' Summer Tubing, Climbing Wall, Bungee Trampoline, Mini Golf, Bounce House, Maze, Scenic Chairlift, and one trip through Gemstone Panning.

Adventure Pass: $52 (Ages 3-6)/$77 (Ages 7+) 13 activities with unlimited access on the Gold Runner Coaster, Alpine Slide, Kids' Adventure Course, Kids' Zip Line, Kids' Summer Tubing, Climbing Wall, Bungee Trampoline, Mini Golf, Bounce House, Maze, Scenic Chairlift, Bike Haul, and one trip through Gemstone Panning.

After a pretty serious downpour, our first stop was the Gold Runner Coaster. We knew we wanted to get several rides in on this attraction in case the weather took a turn for the worst. The line was pretty long so the adults waited in line for the Coaster while the kids headed to the Climbing Wall. The Gold Coaster is awesome and sends you racing 2500 feet down the mountain!

The kids loved the climbing wall and I even gave it a shot too. I am not crazy about heights but the kids scampered right up all three sides of the 35-foot wall! Gem Panning was near the rock wall so we gave that a try and everyone found some nuggets and treasures to take home.

We headed to Mini Golf during lunchtime while the lines were shorter. I have played a lot of putt-putt and this is a fun short course for all ages. The holes are not too close together and the staff kept the crowding to a minimum so we could actually play.

Next door is the Maze. A viewing platform allows parents to watch (and guide) the kids through the maze as they find each of the four letters (M-A-Z-E) to complete their mission. It's harder than it looks and it gave these smart kids something to think about!

For younger kids (30-100 pounds and more in the 5- to 8-year-old range), the must-do attractions are the summer snow tubing, kids zip line, and ropes course.

We missed the trampoline due to rain and lightning moving in again. Every pass includes a Scenic Chairlift ride and the Adventure Pass includes a bike haul (bike not provided). We ran out of time to do this but we were able to use our Epic Local Ski pass on another day and enjoyed a ride up Peak 8 and hike down to Peak 7. My son even caught a few Pokémons on the way down!

TIPS:
  • Download and complete the waiver before you go to save yourself some time.
  • Closed-toe shoes are required for the Alpine Slide, Gold Runner Coaster, Climbing Wall, Zip Line, and Ropes Course.
  • Start early in the day to be able to take in all of the activities. Stay later to get most of them in again if you have the unlimited pass.
  • Enjoy your favorite activities first! The Alpine Slide and Gold Runner Coaster tend to have the longest lines.
  • Don't forget the sunscreen!
  • Check the weather forecast. Some activities may be closed due to rain or lighting.
  • Bring or rent a bike. The Scenic Chairlift ride has a bike haul option.
  • Bring water and snacks. Peak 8 is high so make sure you are well hydrated.
  • Plan a picnic on the mountain. Ride the lift and enjoy the view.
  • Avoid the lines by going during the week or earlier or later in the summer.
  • As always, be prepared for any kind of weather. Since forecasts are not always accurate, we had our shorts on but packed a long-sleeve t-shirt, fleece, a rain jacket!
