Macaroni Craft: Christmas Countdown Chain

🎄 Fun Idea for Christmas

How many times does every mother patiently answer the question, "How many days until Christmas?"

Several years ago, my son just couldn't grasp the concept of counting down days until we made a paper chain to give him a visual aid. He would then happily wake up each morning, rip one link off the end, and see the chain shorten as Christmas or other special day drew closer.

As a 2nd grader, he now understands and can use the calendar, but we continue this tradition. It was a bittersweet moment for me this year as he could make his own paper chain without my help.

Try this with your own kids!  Be prepared for that squeal of delight when they get ready to rip that last link on Christmas morning.

What You Need:

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue

What You Do:

Paper chains have stood the test of time because this craft can be adapted for all ages.

For the youngest child, you might cut the paper strips and just help them glue the links. The next year, that same child might want to cut his own strips after you draw lines on the paper.

This year my son was completely independent with this project. While his strips were not perfect, I enjoyed observing his development and creativity!
