2012 Holiday Blockbuster Movie Guide

The scoop on this season's family and date night movies you won't want to miss!

The holiday season is one of the biggest times of the year in movie ticket sales. Relatives are visiting, kids are out of school, and parents are taking some time off work. Here's the scoop on this season's upcoming films we think you'll want to see.

Wreck-It Ralph - Rated PG (in theaters now)
Animated Action/Adventure. Ralph is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix, the "good guy" star of their video game. After decades of seeing all the glory go to Felix for saving the day, Ralph decides he's tired of playing the role of the bad guy and sets off on a game-hopping journey across the arcade.

Lincoln - Rated PG-13 (opens November 9)
Drama/Biopic. In a nation divided by war, President Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country, and abolish slavery. There is already buzz about a third Oscar win for Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's newest film.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 - Rated PG-13 (opens November 16)
Romance/Action. Twilight fans are both thrilled and heartbroken as the saga comes to a finale. This movie is the conclusion of Stephanie Meyers best-selling series. AMC Theatres around the country, including the ones in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, and Parker are hosting Twilight Saga Marathons for die-hard fans.

Anna Karenina - Rated R (opens November 16)
Drama. Adapted from Leo Tolstoy's timeless tale, this powerful film starring Keira Knightley (in her third literary adaptation with director Joe Wright) and Jude Law tells the epic story of love.

Life of Pi - Rated PG (opens November 21)
Action/Adventure. From Academy-Award winning director Ang Lee comes an exciting 3D adventure film based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel about a boy who survives a disaster at sea and befriends a Bengal tiger.

Rise of the Guardians - Rated PG (opens November 21)
Animated Fantasy. When an evil spirit tries to take over the world, the immortal Guardians - Jack Frost, Santa, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and the Sandman - join forces to protect the hopes, dreams, beliefs, and imagination of children all over the world.

Silver Linings Playbook - Rated R (opens November 21)
Romantic Comedy. Pat (played by Bradley Cooper, the hunk from The Hangover) has lost his house, his job, and his wife. After moving into his parents' home (Robert DeNiro and Jacki Weaver), he meets Tiffany (played by Jennifer Lawrence, the hottie from Hunger Games), a mysterious girl who offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife if he'll do something for her in return.

Playing for Keeps - Rated PG-13 (opens December 7)
Romantic Comedy. A former soccer star returns home to put his life back together and gets roped into coaching his son's soccer team. But his attempt to finally become a "responsible adult" is met with challenges as the soccer moms pursue him at every turn.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Not Yet Rated (opens December 14)
Adventure/Fantasy. From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes the first film adapted from The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Bilbo Baggins is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

The Guilt Trip - Not Yet Rated (opens December 19)
Comedy. Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen) decides to embark on the road trip of a lifetime but is guilted into bringing his mother (Barbra Streisand) along for the ride. Although he is constantly aggravated by her, Andy learns that their lives have more in common than he realized and that his mother's advice may be exactly what he needs.

Monsters, Inc. 3D - Rated G (opens December 19)
Animated Comedy. The beloved Academy Award-winning Disney•Pixar film returns to the big screen in 3D. Sulley (voiced by John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) are the top scare team in Monstropolis. But their lives are thrown into utter chaos when a little girl named Boo accidentally follows Sulley into their world.

Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D - Not Yet Rated (opens December 19)
Fantasy/Biopic. Produced by James Cameron, director of such blockbusters as Titanic and Avatar, this feature film version of the well-known and critically-acclaimed stage show is sure to get the audience ooh-ing and aah-ing.

This is 40 - Rated R (opens December 21)
Comedy. An original comedy by writer-director Judd Apatow that expands upon the story of Pete and Debbie from Knocked Up as we see first-hand how they are dealing with their current state of life.

Parental Guidance - Rated PG (opens Christmas Day)
Comedy. Start with a story written by and starring funnyman Bill Crystal, add Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei, shake well and you've got a family-friendly comedy sure to be full of laughs. Old school grandparents agree to babysit their three 21st century grandkids when their parents head out of town. Love and laughter abound.

Les Misérables - Not Yet Rated (opens Christmas Day)
Drama/Musical. This is the movie my husband and I have been eagerly anticipating more than any other. Anne Hathaway's singing and acting in the trailer literally gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes. This musical phenomenon, the third-longest running show in Broadway history, tells the story of Jean Valjean, a prisoner on parole, and his adopted daughter Cosette during a revolutionary period in France.
