Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

📚 Celebrate Read Across America and Dr. Seuss' Birthday on March 2

February 27, 2013

Dr. Seuss (AKA Theodor Seuss Geisel) was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. One of the most beloved children's authors of all time, Dr. Seuss wrote more than 40 books, many of which he also illustrated. The books have been translated into 15 languages and sold over 200 million copies!

Although Dr. Seuss was married twice, he never had any children of his own. He was quoted as saying, "You have 'em, I'll entertain 'em." And entertain them, he did!

Celebrate his special day with a party of your own using these easy-peasy food ideas, courtesy of Shayna Mills, Macaroni Kid publisher for NE Dallas ... or just snuggle up on the couch with your little ones and a stack of his best-selling books (I saw that Target has them on sale this week)! A special thanks to Shayna Mills, Macaroni Kid publisher for NE Dallas, for sharing these fun recipes and photos!

Activities:

Green Eggs and Ham
Prepare deviled eggs as your favorite recipe calls for but add a few drops of green food coloring to the yolk filling, then fill your eggs. Make ham sandwiches using Hawaiian sweet rolls, brown sugar ham from the deli, Dijon mustard, and Swiss cheese. Serve alongside the green eggs and enjoy!

Thing 1 and Thing 2 Cupcakes
Make your favorite cupcakes and use blue icing to frost. About 15 minutes before your party or before you serve the cupcakes, place blue cotton candy on top of the cupcakes to look like Thing 1 and Thing 2 hair. This is so fun and so easy!

The Cat in the Hat Marshmallow Pops

  • Red Candy Melts
  • Lollipop Sticks
  • Marshmallows

Melt the candy in a microwaveable bowl, adding a little oil if needed to smooth it out. Dip one end into the red and place on wax paper undipped side down to set. Once hardened do the other side of the marshmallow leaving a white stripe of marshmallow showing. Let dry. Using the tip of a very sharp object (ice pick, knife, etc) make a small hole on one end of the marshmallow. Dip your stick in the melted chocolate and stick into the hole. Stick into foam or glass jar and serve.
