Preschool registration is right around the corner. Even though your little one might only be one or two years old, now is the time to start thinking about their early childhood education. Early childhood education is a key component to a child’s success in life. “85% of who you are — your intellect, your personality, your social skills — is developed by age 5.” (Massachusetts Early Education for All, 2013). Whether this education in the early years happens at home or at an early childhood setting or a combination of both, children learn the basics for all of their future knowledge in these early years.

Many parents wonder what they should be looking for in an early childhood setting. Each program has its own educational philosophy and its own personality. Parents should request tours at each preschool they are considering. Classroom environments should be bright, colorful, and filled with choices for young students. It is beneficial for parents to see teachers interacting in loving and engaging ways with their students.

What looks like play to us is core curriculum to a little one. Children learn how to relate to others, respect authority figures (their parents and their teachers), and how to be respected by others. School is not just about ABCs and 123s. Social skills provide the foundation for interpersonal interactions and also classroom behavior. Children in preschool can learn the daily routine of their classroom, having patience with their peers, asking for things that they need, listening to others, paying attention, and following directions. There is MUCH to learn and do in preschool and these are important years. The earlier they start, the further they go!

At Parker Core Knowledge Preschool & Junior Kindergarten, we believe every child has the ability to learn and the sooner we begin their formal instruction, the further they can go. We also believe that experienced teachers teach in ways to help each child achieve important developmental goals. Small class sizes, centers, one-on-one time with teachers, whole group instruction, small groups, and outdoor play will keep students challenged and enjoying learning. We believe this early training will pay dividends in terms of improving Kindergarten readiness in students.
