RENT A FOREST SERVICE CABIN FOR $50/NIGHT!

By Marie Folmar, Macaroni Kid Broomfield Publisher June 25, 2014
Did you know you can rent former US Forest Service Ranger Stations? As part of our family summer vacation, we rented the Carnero Guard Station located in the Rio Grande National Forest in Southwestern Colorado. The cabin is several miles from ANYTHING ... so it is unbelievably quiet. The cabin does not have running water, but it does have a water pump out back. The girls had a grand time pumping the water!

Because there is no running water in the cabin, there are no inside bathrooms. Right next to the front door is a vault toilet. Notice that there is a girls and a boys side ... not quite fair since we had four females and only one male! Though, the two sides are exactly the same, so feel free to choose either!

The inside of the cabin is quite modern. There is a propane refrigerator/freezer and a stove. There are also propane lights ... no electricity in this cabin! The kitchen/living room area features a table, a couch and a couple of comfy chairs.

The separate bunk area has four bunk beds. All of the bunk beds are twins over doubles, so there was plenty of room for our family of five. Oh, and did I mention that this cabin is dog friendly? Our two four-legged children joined us on vacation. There is a pole fence around the guard station, which creates a "yard" for the dogs to explore while we ate dinner at the picnic table.

As we were leaving the cabin to head back to civilization, we met this little fellow.

To learn more, visit the Carnero Guard Station online. Find out what other cool cabins and lookouts you can rent at www.recreation.gov. In the "Interested In" box, type the area you would like to visit, select Camping & Lodging, then Cabins.
