One Book One District Program Promotes Literacy and Community

DCSD and local schools will host a variety of events inspired by the book Becoming a Good Creature.

November 6, 2023

Douglas County School District’s (DCSD) District Library Media Center (DLMC) is hosting its third annual One Book One District literacy program. This celebration will take place at most DCSD elementary schools and participating middle and high schools the week of November 13-17.

Schools and the school district will host a variety of events centered around the book Becoming a Good Creature by author Sy Montgomery, including a virtual meet and greet with the author on Wednesday, November 15.

New this year, the DLMC has partnered with DCSD Sustainability, the Douglas County Conservation District, to host a community kickoff event from 9:00 AM until noon on Saturday, November 11, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

The free event will include exciting and hands-on activities such as reading to chickens and dogs, learning and viewing live critters from the Front Range with Nature’s Educators, and much more. As an added incentive, the school with the most participants in attendance will receive $1,000 in books for their library!

In addition to daily events throughout the week — such as Gratitude Day and Kindness Day — the DLMC is also encouraging students and staff to participate in a district-wide toiletries drive to support SECOR Cares, a local nonprofit organization. The toiletry drive is being headed up by students at the district's newest high school, VALE Academy (Venture Academy of Leadership and Entrepreneurship).

Families and students can donate toiletry items in their school libraries, and the elementary, middle, and high schools with the highest number of donations will win $500 in books for their libraries.
