Macaroni Craft: Make Your Own Snowflake

❄️ Cool Craft for Winter

By Melissa Alcorn, Bloomington-Normal, IL Publisher November 28, 2012

Here's a fun craft to do with your child to make a beautiful snowflake!

What You Need:

  • White chenille stem
  • Clean, empty mason jar or spaghetti sauce jar
  • 2-3 cups of water
  • 1/3 cup borax (found in the laundry aisle of the grocery store)
  • String, ribbon, or floss
  • Spoon

What You Do:

  1. Use a white chenille stem to create a snowflake-like shape. There is no wrong way to do this. Tie a piece of yarn/ribbon/floss to the "snowflake" so that you can hang it.
  2. Pour the borax into the mason jar. Grown-ups, carefully pour the boiling water into the jar.  Use the spoon to stir until the borax is dissolved.
  3. Once dissolved, hang the snowflake on a pencil held horizontally. Place the pencil over the opening of the mason jar so that the snowflake is suspended in the liquid mixture. You may have to adjust the length of your string so that the snowflake is fully immersed but not touching the bottom of the jar.
  4. Let sit overnight. In the morning you will have a beautiful sparking snowflake. These look great hung in a window!
