My boys ask me what we're having for dinner nearly every night. Usually, I respond with, "Dirt and worms." They figured out years ago that I was teasing, but they continue to pose the question, and I continue to answer the same way.

Last year, my bigger guy invited a friend to join us for dinner. When the friend asked what we were eating, my son told him, "Dirt and worms." I corrected him and said, "No, tonight we're having that for dessert!" They could hardly contain their giggles when they each got their own bowl of "dirt" complete with gummy worms!

If your mini macaronis like to help you in the kitchen, they'll love helping you make this, especially the cookie-crushing part. If they think bugs are cool, they'll love eating them! If you're a chocolate hound like I am, you'll love it as much as they do!

Dirt and Worms Dessert

  • 1 package chocolate sandwich cookies (e.g., Oreo)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon butter, softened
  • 2 large boxes (5.1 ounces) instant chocolate pudding
  • 3 ½ cups milk
  • 1 tub (12 ounces) whipped topping (like Cool Whip)
  • Gummy Worms

Crush the cookies till they resemble soil. This part is the most fun for my kids. Put them in a gallon-size zipper bag and let the kids pound away with their fists or use a rolling pin. Set crumbs aside.

In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, powdered sugar, and butter with an electric mixer till creamy; set aside.

Beat the milk and pudding until stiff, about seven minutes, with an electric mixer in a large bowl. Fold half of the whipped topping into the pudding mixture, then fold in the cream cheese mixture, followed by the rest of the Cool Whip.

Layer together the crushed cookies and the pudding mixture in small flowerpots, buckets, or vases, beginning and ending with crushed cookies. Top with worms and serve!
