Recipe Box: Watermelon Margaritas (Kid-Friendly and Adult Versions)

🇲🇽 Yummy Drink for Cinco de Mayo (or Any Summer Day!)

July 2, 2014

Although watermelon is available at grocery stores year-round (thanks to imported watermelon), the peak of the growing season in the United States is NOW!

When choosing a watermelon, the heaviest for its size will be the ripest. Feel it all over to make sure there are no soft spots. Also, check the flattened area where the watermelon was lying on the ground... it should be yellowish rather than white if the melon is ripe.

Watermelon Margaritas (Alcohol-Free Version)

  • 4 cups watermelon chunks (seeds removed or use seedless)
  • 6 Tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 4 cups ice cubes
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges for garnish

Combine all ingredients except lime wedges in a blender; purée until smooth. Divide among four classes and garnish with lime wedges.

Watermelon Margaritas (Adults Only)

  • 3 cups watermelon chunks (seeds removed or use seedless)
  • Juice of 10 limes
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 1 cup tequila
  • ½ cup Grand Marnier or triple sec

Combine watermelon, lime juice, sugar, and ice cubes in a blender; purée until smooth. Add alcohol and pulse to blend. Fill tall glasses with more ice, pour the margaritas, and serve.

For extra sweetness, dip the glass rims in maple or agave syrup and then granulated sugar. The honey will help the sugar stick to the rim better than water.
