"Family Time" Resolutions for the New Year

🎊 Tips for a Healthier and Happier New Year

By Melissa Hucal December 14, 2019

For many, a new year also comes with some resolutions or promises of things to start doing, stop doing, or continue. This year, why not get your whole family involved in creating some resolutions that will result in more intentional time together?

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Commit to an "Unplugged" Night.
Whether it’s once a week or once a month, pick a time to turn off all the TVs, computers, handheld devices, and phones to just spend the evening focusing on each other!

Play a game, take a walk, read a book together, or simply talk about your day. You’ll be surprised at how much easier it will be to connect when you are electronics free!

Commit to trying one new food each week.
Take a trip through the fruits and vegetables section of your grocery store and pick up something your family has never eaten. Could be an eggplant or rutabaga or pomegranate. Or maybe it’s something less "exotic." Whatever the case, make the choice as a family and then research ideas for preparation together.

Or perhaps your family would like to explore cuisine from a different culture. Pick a new country each week and then shop for and prepare a dinner that a family from that country would enjoy.

Commit to get active together.
Set a goal for a certain number of miles to walk (and then hit your local trails) or laps to swim (and then visit the pool) or set a goal to run a race as a family this spring and train together for it.

Commit to try something new (to you) in your own town.
Even if you’ve lived there for years, we bet there are a few places or events in your town that you just haven’t tried out yet — think museums, parks, or historical sites. Find a few that fit your family’s interests and then put a date on the calendar to check them out.
