Saturday, June 10 was National Get Outdoors Day, an annual event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun. But why celebrate just one day? We live in glorious Colorado where the summers can't be beat ... celebrate all summer long!
According to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average tween or teen (ages 8 to 18) is spending more than 7 hours per day on electronic screen time. The percentage of overweight and obese children and teens has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Although many factors contribute to this epidemic, one of the primary reasons is that children have become more sedentary.
The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the National Wildlife Federation all agree that children should spend a minimum of 30-60 minutes every day engaged in unstructured, outdoor play.
