My kids are getting so excited about watching the Summer Olympics. We've enjoyed talking about the history of the Games, the determination demonstrated by the amazing athletes, the global world in which we now live, and the community spirit of the Olympics.

The symbol of the Olympic rings was designed in 1912 by Pierre de Coubertin, one of the founders of the modern Olympic games. It was created to represent all participating nations:

  • Five rings represent the participating continents: The Americas (North and South represented as one, which my kids found very confusing), Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania (which includes Australia, New Zealand, the Polynesian Islands, and the Micronesian Islands)
  • Pierre de Coubertin explained that the colors (blue, black, red, yellow, and green on a white background) are the ones that "appear on at least one of all the national flags of the world at the present time united by Olympism."
  • The rings interlock and are all the same size, symbolizing community and equality.

This afternoon snack, inspired by the rings, was simple to make and delicious to eat! We had a great discussion about the rings while we were preparing our sweet treat!

What You Need:

  • Sugar cookies (store-bought or homemade)
  • White and chocolate frosting
  • Sugar
  • Food coloring
  • Mini chocolate chips

What You Do:

  1. Add a drop or two of food coloring to a spoonful of white frosting to create the colors of blue, red, yellow, and green. Set aside.
  2. Add a drop or two of food coloring to a spoonful of sugar to create the same colors. Set aside.
  3. Cut a hole in the center of each of the cookies. We used a plastic cup we had leftover from last year's Halloween party, but you can do it free-form with a knife.
  4. Frost your cookies using the colors you created plus chocolate to represent black.
  5. Sprinkle the coordinating sugar onto the blue, red, yellow, and green cookies.
  6. Top the chocolate-frosted cookie with mini chocolate chips.
