Craft Corner: Grocery Bag Parachute People

🌎 A Cool Craft from Recycled Materials to Celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd (and Year-Round)!

By Jamie Twarogowski, Macaroni Kid Publisher April 19, 2017
Create a fun afternoon with recycled supplies you may already have on hand!

What You Need:
  • Craft Sticks
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Plastic Grocery Bags
  • Markers
What You Do:

Step 1:
Attach two craft sticks together in the shape of a cross and fasten with a pipe cleaner. Leave about 1" of each end remaining. We used a big craft stick for the body and a small one for the arms.

Step 2:
Using the markers, personalize your craft stick person by giving him or her a face, hands, feet, clothes, etc

Step 3:
Attach your person to the handles of the plastic bag using the ends you left on the pipe cleaner. Be sure to secure it tightly.
Step 4:
Make fly and float!

Tip:
We found it best to lightly roll the parachute about half way. Then, while holding your person and your parachute, throw them straight up in the air. Watch as your parachute opens and your person floats to safety.

Experiment by adding more or less weight to your person by using more pipe cleaner or adding beads or other decorative supplies you may have on hand. See what makes him/her float the best!
