Now that school is back in swing our children are engulfed in homework, extracurricular activities, and sports. Don’t let the hustle and bustle stop you from finding quality time together. If you’re divorced, you probably already split time with your child between households, so every second together is precious.

Here are a few out of the box ways you can spend time with your children on evenings and weekends:

We’re headed into one of the best seasons for outdoor activities, so why not pack up a delicious lunch and head to a park where you and your kids can catch up over a meal? Bring a deck of cards and teach them how to play something; card games are great for fun conversation! If your kids are more active you can bring a soccer ball or baseball to pass back and forth. Either way, enjoying the beautiful fall weather is sure to please parents and children alike.

Another great way to spend time with your kids is to involve them in your meal planning and cooking. Kitchen skills are beneficial to all children, especially once they’re headed off to college. Starting them young means they’ll have plenty of time to gain confidence in the kitchen and learn about how to cook healthy meals. An added bonus for this activity is that you would be cooking dinner either way — this just incorporates spending time with your children as well.

A very useful way to spend time with your children is to have them shadow you whenever you're fixing something in the house. Having them watch how to take care of things around the house will give them invaluable tools down the road. Eventually, as they grow older, you can supervise while they complete the tasks themselves.

September brings with it the changing of seasons and the beginning of a new school year. Even though this time of year is fraught with activity, it’s always important to take the time to slow down just a little bit so you can spend that quality time with the kiddos.
