DIY Basement Tiny Town

By Sarah Hauge, Publisher of Macaroni Kid Englewood-Greenwood Village-Centennial November 8, 2017

It's hard to believe we've already had our first day of snow! Part of me was excited, but the other part was screaming, "Noooooo, not yet!" As many parents would agree, the days of being trapped inside the house with fully energized kiddos can be rather difficult — to put things nicely. Fortunately, last year I had a small stroke of genius that made those long, blizzarding days quite fun for all of us.

Inspired by Tiny Town in Morrison, we transformed part of our basement into our own little town. Complete with a road, traffic light, and range of ride-on vehicles, this previously unused space became a fully-functioning fun zone!

Supplies Needed:

  • Construction Paper
  • Tape/Glue
  • Scissors
  • Embellishments
  • Painters Tape (for the road)
  • Cardboard boxes (for any free-standing buildings and obstacles)

Notes:

  1. To make each building, I started with the same template: A 3'x3' page rectangle (using standard construction paper).
  2. Get your children involved. Ask them what buildings they'd like to make or have them be responsible for the embellishments.
  3. It took us approximately 30 minutes to build each building, as I added lots of little details to customize each one.
  4. When friends see our space for the first time, they always comment on the IKEA building. (And it was the easiest one to make!)

Save your cardboard boxes to really add some interactive fun with free-standing buildings such as drive-thru restaurants, grocery stores, doctor offices, a zoo, and more. The possibilities are truly endless.
