2018 Summer Blockbusters, Family Films, and Must-See Movies

By Kyrie Collins, Highlands Ranch-Parker-Castle Rock-Lone Tree Publisher May 16, 2018

Whether it's family night, girls' night, or date night, this summer's movies are sure to please!

MAY 18

Book Club (Comedy • PG-13) Oh what a cast! Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen play four lifelong friends whose lives change in unexpected ways when their book club tackles the infamous Fifty Shades of Grey. It's the first of many movie nights out I'll be having with my besties this summer!

Deadpool 2 (Super Hero Action/Comedy • R) Ryan Reynolds, AKA the funniest dad on Twitter, is BACK! This time he'll have to battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family and friendship. Like the first one, watching it with your kiddos will be more than a little ... AWKWARD!

MAY 25

Solo: A Star Wars Story (Sci-Fi Action/Adventure • PG-13) Sure he's a scoundrel, but that's why we love him so much! Follow a young Han Solo as he travels the galaxy, meets his future copilot Chewbacca, and encounters the notorious but charming gambler Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover).

JUNE 1

Adrift (Drama • PG-13) Based on a true story, Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin star as a young couple in love who embark on an exciting sailing trip together. But when their small boat hits one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in history, their adventure of a lifetime turns into a story of survival.

JUNE 8

Ocean's 8 (Action/Adventure • PG-13) It's a whole new "Ocean's" when eight women — played by Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter — plan and execute a heist in New York. There is nothing that can keep me away from this film! #starpower #yaaaassssss

Won't You Be My Neighbor? (Documentary • NR) Mr. Rogers was the epitome of love, kindness, acceptance, and wisdom and I think our world could use a little more of that. This movie about the magic behind Mister Rogers' Neighborhood had its World Premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

JUNE 15

Incredibles 2 (Animated Action/Adventure • PG) Everyone's favorite super hero family is back, but this time Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) at home. When a new villain hatches an evil plot, the family and Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) must all work together again.

Tag (Comedy • R) Now why didn't I think of this? A group of classmates play an elaborate annual game of tag well into adulthood! The cast is full of some of my favorites, including Jeremy Renner, Isla Fisher, Rashida Jones, Jon Hamm, Ed Helms, Hannibal Buress, and many more!

JUNE 22

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Sci-Fi Action/Adventure • PG-13) What can go wrong with cloning dinosaurs? This time, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) must decided whether or not to rescue dinosaurs from an extinction-level event. A variety of people and dinosaurs will certainly perish.

JULY 6

Ant-Man and the Wasp (Super Hero Action • PG-13) The first Ant-Man movie was one of the funniest super hero movies I've ever seen! Hubby and I My boys can't wait to see Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) embark on an urgent new mission in which he will fight alongside Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly)!

JULY 13

Eighth Grade (Dramedy • R) Written and directed by internet star Bo Burnham, this coming-of-age story focuses on Kayla (Elsie Fisher), who's just trying to make it through the final week of 8th grade before moving on to high school.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (Animated Comedy • PG) Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg are one of my favorite Hollywood couples ever! Join your favorite monster family on a luxury monster cruise ship so Drac (Sandler) can take a break from providing everyone else's vacation at the hotel. It's a dream vacation that turns into a nightmare!

Skyscraper (Action • PG-13) FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) has been framed for setting the world's tallest building on fire. With his family trapped inside above the fire line, he must find the real perpetrators, clear his name, and rescue his family ... all while evading capture.

JULY 20

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (Musical • PG-13) In this ABBA-centric sequel, Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård all return and are joined by — OMG! — Cher!

JULY 27

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (Action/Adventure • PG-13) Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) are back in a race against time after a(nother) mission gone wrong. It looks like it will be exactly the same as the previous four missions ... they'll keep making 'em if we keep paying to see 'em.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies (Animated Action/Comedy • PG) When the Teen Titans go to the big screen, they go big! Our egocentric, wildly satirical Super Heroes have their first feature film extravaganza — a fresh, gleefully clever, kid-appropriately crass, and tongue-in-cheek play on the superhero genre, complete with musical numbers.

AUGUST 24

A-X-L (Sci-Fi Action • PG) What happens when you combine cutting edge artificial intelligence with the heart of a dog? You get A-X-L.
