Craft Corner: DIY Sponge Grass Garden

🌱 Cool Craft to Celebrate Spring

Gardening is not my strong suit, but I have found great value in teaching basic nature lessons to my children each spring. One such lesson is observing the process of growing grass from seeds.

With a little bit of care and patience, your child can grow a miniature lawn in the comfort of your own home.

What You Need:

  • Plate
  • Sponge
  • Grass seeds
  • Water
  • Plastic wrap
  • Spray bottle

What You Do:

1. Wet the sponge with water and wring it out so that it remains damp without dripping water.

2. Sprinkle grass seeds across the top of the sponge.

3. Lightly spray the grass seeds with some water using a spray bottle.

4. Loosely cover the sponge with a piece of plastic wrap.

5. Set your sponge in a sunny location and wait approximately two weeks for the grass to grow.

6. Continue to spritz with water as needed (so that the sponge remains damp).

Grass grows surprisingly quickly! When the grass gets to be a couple inches tall, hand over a pair of scissors and segue into a landscaping lesson by allowing your child to trim the blades. Simple lessons like this will help your child develop a green thumb in no time.
