2018 Winter Blockbusters, Family Films, and Must-See Movies

November 1, 2018

From historical biographies to family comedies to more super heroes, this season's slate of movies is sure to please with something for everyone!

November 2

Bohemian Rhapsody (Drama/Biopic • PG-13) WE WILL ROCK YOU! Queen fans around the world will be lining up for this one! Is it a problem if I sing along through the entire movie?

Boy Erased (Drama • R) Lucas Hedges got his first Oscar nomination for Manchester by the Sea. He may receive a second one for his superb performance as a Southern gay teenager forced into conversion by his deeply religious parents (played by Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe). The movie is based on a heartbreaking, true story.

Nobody’s Fool (Comedy • R) Trying to get back on her feet, wild child Tanya (Tiffany Haddish ... Hollywood's hottest comedian right now) looks to her buttoned-up, by-the-book sister Danica (Tika Sumpter) to help her get back on track. These polar opposites collide — with hilarious and sometimes disastrous results — in Tyler Perry's latest comedy.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (Fantasy • PG) Disney's holiday feature film is a new twist on a classic story featuring toy soldiers and an army of mice. Morgan Freeman as Drosselmeyer and Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy? Yes please!

November 9

Beautiful Boy (Drama • R) Based on the best-selling memoirs of a father and son — played by Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet — chronicling a family's difficult and inspirational experience with addiction, relapse, and recovery over the course of many years. If you are in need of a good cry, this will help, I'm sure.

The Girl in the Spider's Web (Action/Thriller • R) Lisbeth Salander, the cult figure and title character of the acclaimed Millennium book series created by Stieg Larsson, returns to the screen in this adaptation of the recent global bestseller. Golden Globe winner Claire Foy (The Crown) plays the outcast vigilante defender.

The Grinch (Animated Comedy • PG) So, how did the Grinch become so ... grinch-y? Learn his backstory and discover why he decided to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville in this prequel to the beloved classic.

November 16

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Fantasy/Adventure • PG-13) The eagerly anticipated second installment of the Fantastic Beasts series introduces Jude Law as a young Albus Dumbledore. When Professor Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to help thwart Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), lines are drawn as love and loyalties are tested in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Instant Family (Comedy • PG-13) When Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne) decide to start a family, they stumble into the world of foster care adoption. They meet three siblings and go from zero kids to instant parenthood overnight. Inspired by the real events from the life of writer/director Sean Anders.

Widows (Thriller • R) Crime. Passion. Corruption. This modern-day thriller tells the story of four women whose husbands were all killed on a job. Together they vow to finish the heist their husbands had started planning. From Academy-Award-winning directory Steve McQueen and co-writer and bestselling author of Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn.

November 21

Creed II (Sports Drama • PG-13) This movie picks up where the first one left off ... Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) continues to train light-heavyweight champion Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan, who deserved an Oscar nomination last time, IMO), this time to prepare him to fight Viktor Drago, son of Ivan Drago. Do these names sound familiar? They should! It's Rocky for the new generation.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 (Animated Comedy • PG) Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (voiced by Sarah Silverman) are back for a new adventure and we are so excited to see them again. Just about every Disney princess will be appearing in the movie too, along with a new character, Yesss (and the spelling of that character's name is indeed correct)! #girlpower

Robin Hood (Action/Adventure • PG-13) How many times can the classic story be remade? At least once more apparently! Taron Egerton may be the hunkiest Robin Hood yet, and Jamie Foxx plays the most charming and interesting Little John I've ever seen.

December 7

Mary Queen of Scots (Historical Drama • TBD) The charismatic Mary Queen of Scots (Saoirse Ronan) and her cousin Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie) were rivals in power and in love. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones — and change the course of history. Based on Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart by John Guy.

December 14

Mortal Engines (Action/Adventure • PG-13) Director Peter Jackson brings a larger-than-life saga to the big screen about a desolate Earth thousands of years after the "Sixty Minute War." Expect high action and visually exciting sequences in this movie based on the book by Philip Reeve.

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (Animated Super Hero Action • TBD) According to the comic books, Peter Parker wasn't the only one to sport the Spidey suit ... Brooklyn teen Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) was another. He must team up with other Spider-Men in parallel dimension to stop a threat to all reality.

December 19

Mary Poppins Returns (Musical • PG) In this all-new sequel, Mary Poppins (played by the practically perfect Emily Blunt) returns to help Jane and Michael, the now-grown Banks children, to rediscover the joy and wonder in their lives.

December 21

Aquaman (Super Hero Action/Adventure • PG-13) Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people. Other than Wonder Woman, the DC super heroes haven't fared too well ... let's see if this one can turn it around.

Bumblebee (Sci-Fi Action/Adventure • TBD) It's 1987 in a small California beach town when Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfield) discovers a battle-scarred and frightened Bumblebee. The prequel to 2007's Transformers also stars John Cena and the voices of Justin Theroux and Angela Bassett.

Holmes & Watson (Comedy • TBD) The Step Brothers are reunited! Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly star as the world’s greatest consulting detective and his loyal biographer.

Second Act (Rom-Com • PG-13) Jennifer Lopez returns to the big screen as a big box store worker who finds herself (through a bit of unintended deception) in the corner office as a big wig executive. Can she prove that street smarts equals book smarts?

Welcome to Marwen (Drama • PG-13) Academy Award® winner Robert Zemeckis — the groundbreaking filmmaker behind Forrest Gump, Flight, and Cast Away — directs Steve Carell in the most original movie of the year. Based on the inspirational true story of one broken man’s discovery that artistic imagination can restore the human spirit.

December 25

On the Basis of Sex (Drama/Biopic • PG-13) The true story of a young and spirited Ruth Bader Ginsburg (portrayed by Felicity Jones) as she teams up with her husband Marty to bring a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court of Appeals and overturn a century of gender discrimination.
