"It's like changing a tire while you are driving your car," replied Jim Evins, one of the owners of Impact Taekwondo in Highlands Ranch, when asked about how they have had to change things up in this age of social distancing.
"One day we are holding regular classes full of students having fun and learning Martial Arts. Two days later we are holding small group classes or private lessons. The week after that everything was virtual and we were holding Virtual Classes and Virtual Private Lessons"
When Jim and Michele Evins opened Impact Taekwondo eight years ago, they never imagined a scenario like this. In a matter of days, they had to completely revamp how they deliver their programs to students and maintain the level of service and deliver the value families have come to expect.
With positive attitudes and a little technology, they have converted a program that is personal, close, and fast paced into a remote learning environment while still keeping the energy, focus, and fun.
"We have added so much great stuff for our students," explains Jim. "A student portal that contains our curriculum, videos of the curriculum, and links to the Zoom Classes and Virtual Private Lessons. Zoom has let us be interactive with our students. Classes continue to be fun and active! Students get the immediate feedback they require to learn and improve."
"Our community has been amazing" adds Michele. "They have followed us into this new way to deliver traditional martial arts. Most parents have been really appreciative of what we are doing. In these difficult times it's allowing their children to do something they love even if they can't come into the school."
In addition to group classes, Impact Taekwondo offers virtual private lessons. Private lessons are 15 minutes of one-on-one time with an instructor so the student can participate without any distractions. These shorter, focused sessions have proven successful for many of Impact's students, especially the younger ones.
