2021 Summer Blockbusters, Family Films, and Must-See Movies

June 1, 2021

Movies in the theater are BACK! The summer movie season has arrived, with the usual mix of superheroes, sequels, remakes, and kid-friendly films. Grab your friends and family and a BIG bucket of popcorn. Your Must-Watch list is about to get even longer!

NOTE: Some of the movies will be released on streaming services and in theaters at the same time. All release dates are subject to change.

Cruella (Comedy | PG-13) I love a good villain origin story (think Joker or Maleficent). And I love Emma Stone. So, of course, this was at the top of my list — and it did not disappoint! I'll be shocked if Jenny Beavan doesn't win the Academy Award® for Best Costume Design. They were FABULOUS!

Dream Horse (Biography | PG) It's the feel-good movie of the summer, based on a true story. Dream Alliance is an unlikely racehorse bred by Jan Vokes (Toni Collette), a small-town Welsh bartender. With no experience, Jan convinces her neighbors to chip in their meager earnings to help raise Dream in the hopes he can compete with the racing elites.

Here Today (Comedy | PG-13) When veteran comedy writer Charlie Burnz (Billy Crystal) meets New York street singer Emma Payge (Tiffany Haddish), they form an unlikely yet hilarious and touching friendship that kicks the generation gap aside and redefines the meaning of love and trust.

A Quiet Place: Part II (Thriller | PG-13) A follow-up to the highly successful 2018 original, the Abbott family (Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe) must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. It's not quite as quiet as the first one, but it is every bit as suspenseful and thrilling!

Scoob! (Animated Adventure | PG) Learn the story of how Scooby and Shaggy first met and how they teamed up with Fred, Velma, and Daphne. Now, with hundreds of cases solved, Scooby and the gang face their biggest and most challenging mystery ever.

Spirit Untamed (Animated Adventure | PG) An epic adventure about a headstrong girl longing for a place to belong who discovers a kindred spirit when her life intersects with a wild horse, Spirit Untamed is the next chapter in the beloved story.

12 Might Orphans (Drama | PG-13) Luke Wilson, Robert Duvall, and Martin Sheen star in this historical drama based on the incredible and true story of a high school football coach who took a team of orphans all the way to the state championship during the Great Depression.

In the Heights (Musical | PG-13) From the creator of Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and the director of Crazy Rich Asians (Jon M. Chu) comes a movie that is at the top of my summer bucket list! The Tony award-winning musical, inspired by the neighborhood Miranda grew up in, was written long before Hamilton. The film adaptation will make you want to get up and dance in the middle of the theater!

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (Comedy | PG) Based on the characters of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, this sequel finds Thomas and Bea married and living with Peter and his rabbit family. Bored of life in the garden, Peter goes to the big city, where he meets shady characters and ends up creating chaos for the whole family.

The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (Action | R) The world’s most lethal odd couple – bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) and hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) – are back on another life-threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius’s even more volatile wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek).

The Sparks Brothers (Documentary | R) This music documentary film directed by Edgar Wright about the creators of the pop and rock band Sparks was the Official Selection at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. It's the outrageous story of "your favorite band's favorite band."

F9 (Action | PG-13) Fast cars, high action, and explosions galore. Does the plot even matter? I've said it before and I'll say it again... if we keep seeing them, they'll keep making them!

The Boss Baby: Family Business (Animated Comedy | PG) The Templeton brothers are all grown up — and grown apart. A new boss baby is about to bring them together again — and inspire a new family business too.

Summer of Soul (Documentary | PG-13) The same summer as Woodstock, the Harlem Cultural Festival also took place. Known as "The Black Woodstock," the footage has never been seen... until now. Directed by The Roots' very own Questlove and Grand Jury Prize winner at 2021 Sundance Festival, you can now witness "the revolution that could not be televised."

Black Widow (Superhero Action | TBD) Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow in Marvel's action-packed spy thriller that takes place between Civil War and Infinity War.

Space Jam: A New Legacy (Animated Adventure/Comedy | TBD) It's Tunes vs. Goons. NBA superstar LeBron James teams up with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the rest of the Looney Tunes characters for this long-awaited sequel.

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (Animated Comedy | TBD) The cast you've grown to love — including Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, and Selena Gomez — returns for the final chapter of the Hotel Transylvania series.

Old (Thriller | TBD) Visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan brings us a haunting new thriller about a family who discovers that the secluded beach where they are vacationing is somehow causing them to age rapidly, reducing their entire lives into a single day.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (Action | TBD) This G.I. Joe spinoff stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, a loner who is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent. Upon arrival in Japan, the Arashikage teach Snake Eyes the ways of the ninja warrior. But, when secrets from his past are revealed, Snake Eyes' honor and allegiance will be tested, even if that means losing the trust of those closest to him.

The Green Knight (Fantasy/Adventure | R) Dev Patel plays the headstrong nephew of King Arthur in this epic adaption of the Arthurian Legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Jungle Cruise (Adventure | PG-13) Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Emily Blunt star in this movie inspired by Disney's popular theme park ride. Take an action-packed journey on a small riverboat through a supernatural jungle with danger lurking around every bend.

The Suicide Squad (Sci-Fi Action/Comedy | R) Supervillains Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), and a collection of other cons at Belle Reve prison join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X for a super-secret, super shady mission.

CODA (Drama | PG-13) This coming-of-age story about Ruby, a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) who is torn between pursuing her love of music and helping her family's fishing business. It was the hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival and is expected to be an Academy Awards contender.

Free Guy (Action/Comedy | TBD) When a bank teller (Ryan Reynolds) discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, he decides to become the hero of his own story… one he rewrites himself.

Respect (Biography | PG-13) Jennifer Hudson stars as legendary R&B singer Aretha Franklin. Christmas comes early this year!

Paw Patrol: The Movie (Animated Adventure | G) Paw Patrol fans won't want to miss this! Ryder and the pups are called to Adventure City to stop Mayor Humdinger from turning the bustling metropolis into a state of chaos. The voice cast includes some of Hollywood's most famous, including Kim Kardashian, Jimmy Kimmel, Tyler Perry, and many others.

Reminiscence (Sci-Fi Thriller | PG-13) Nicolas Bannister (Hugh Jackman), a scientist who offers clients the chance to relive any memory they desire, develops a passionate love affair with Mae (Rebecca Ferguson). But when a different client's memories implicate her in a series of violent crimes, Bannister must delve through the dark world of the past to uncover the truth.

The Beatles: Get Back (Documentary | TBD) This exciting new collaboration between the most influential band of all time and three-time Oscar®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson was compiled from over 55 hours of unseen footage and 140 hours of mostly unheard audio recordings from the “Let It Be” album sessions. Get an intimate look at The Beatles' recording sessions for “Let It Be” and their final live set together on the rooftop of Apple’s Savile Row London office.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Action | TBD) Marvel Studios is bringing us a new superhero movie starring Simu Liu as Shang-Chi alongside Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, and many others.

Clifford the Big Red Dog (Animated Comedy | TBD) Based on the beloved cartoon, a young girl loves a tiny puppy so much, it makes him gigantic!

Dear Evan Hanson (Drama | TBD) Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award winner Ben Platt reprises his role as a socially awkward high schooler who — like all of us — is seeking acceptance and understanding. Also starring Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Julianne Moore, and Amy Adams.

The Many Saints of Newark (Crime Drama | R) Fans of The Sopranos won't want to miss this prequel to the popular HBO TV series. Set in the '60s and '70s, it focuses on the early years of Tony Soprano. The lead role is played by Michael Gandolfini, following in his late father's footsteps.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Sci-Fi Action | TBD) Tom Hardy returns to the big screen as the lethal protector Venom, one of MARVEL's greatest and most complex characters. The film also stars Woody Harrelson in the role of the villain Cletus Kasady/Carnage.
