MONTHLY OBSERVANCES

FAMILY FUN MONTH
Macaroni Kid makes it easy to find your family fun with THE most comprehensive event calendar in all of Douglas County. You'll find scores of local family-friendly events every week, most of which cost $20 or less per person!

DID YOU KNOW? Our events are searchable by age, town, or type of activity (like "Indoor Play," "Nature," or "STEM").

NATIONAL GOLF MONTH
Have your kids ever golfed? If not, this is a great month to learn! We personally recommend lessons with TGA Premier Youth Golf and Tennis. If miniature golf is more your style, try the outdoor course at Boondocks Food & Fun in Parker or the indoor glow-in-the-dark course at Monster Mini Golf in Centennial.

NATIONAL BROWNIES AT BRUNCH MONTH
Brownies for brunch? Yes, please! With our recipe for Zucchini Brownies, you can enjoy them every day guilt-free without sacrificing any flavor!

NATIONAL CRAYON COLLECTION MONTH
If your crayon collection looks anything like ours, it's full of broken bits and pieces. Did you know you can use those little fragments to make new crayons in fun shapes and sizes? Or, pick up a few extra boxes of crayons while shopping for school supplies and make a fun Back-to-School Crayon Wreath to celebrate the start of a new school year!

AUGUST HOLIDAYS AND WAYS TO CELEBRATE

AUGUST 1: FRIENDSHIP DAY
Remember how easy it was to make friends when you were a kid? If only it were so easy as adults! Even when I meet someone I enjoy spending time with AND our spouses get along AND our kids play well, it can be a challenge to find time to get together. So if you've got a great friend, call them up today and make a plan to get together for coffee to celebrate how lucky you were to have found each other!

Looking to make new friends? Next time your kids make a new friend at the park, pool, or other outing, use it as an opportunity for a potential friendship for you too. Add your name, your child's name, and your phone number to our free printable playdate cards and pass them out to the other moms and dads you meet!

AUGUST 3: NATIONAL WATERMELON DAY
Can you name a fruit that says “SUMMER” better than watermelon? Not only is it delicious and thirst-quenching, but it’s also an excellent source of Vitamin C (a powerful antioxidant) and a valuable source of lycopene, which may help reduce the risk of prostate, breast, lung, and colon cancers. Want a refreshing dessert for a hot summer day? Watermelon Granita is ridiculously easy to make and tastes oh-so-good!

AUGUST 5: NATIONAL UNDERWEAR DAY
Hmmm. I suppose you could say our family celebrates this day every day. Maybe the best way to make it a special day is to watch the Captain Underpants movie!

AUGUST 7: CAMPFIRE DAY
I never learned how to build a campfire so I'm always grateful when someone else does it. Once you get the fire going, make some easy-to-prepare (and clean up) campfire meals, complete with the main course, sides, and dessert! Here are some upcoming "campfire" events:

AUGUST 8: SNEAK SOME ZUCCHINI ONTO YOUR NEIGHBOR'S PORCH
Zucchini is a summer squash that is low in calories, high in fiber, and chock-full of great vitamins and minerals. If your neighbor brings you a bushel, take advantage of the opportunity to bake a batch of Zucchini-Applesauce Muffins or a tray of veggie-filled Zucchini Lasagna.

AUGUST 13: NATIONAL KOOL-AID DAY
Raise your hand if you spent your childhood with red stains at the corners of your mouth. ✋ You can still pick up a packet of unsweetened Kool-Aid at the store for about a quarter. Use a packet to make some DIY Kool-Aid Play Dough. Or mix it up to make "Sunshine on a Stick"!

I'm old enough to have watched this commercial on TV when I was a child:

AUGUST 15: RELAXATION DAY
It's been a long hot summer filled with one activity after the next. Time to take a day off and relax! We've still got a few weeks left to take advantage of free yoga classes in the park.

For a true getaway that's close to home, plan a night or two at Gaylord Rockies Resort and spend a whole day floating in a tube on their lazy river!

AUGUST 19: NATIONAL POTATO DAY
For a quick and easy side dish that goes great with grilled steak, our Rosemary & Garlic Roasted Potatoes can't be beat!

AUGUST 20: WORLD MOSQUITO DAY
I'm not sure why mosquitos should get a day of celebration — I don't know anyone who is a fan! But if, like me, you are afflicted with mosquito-attracting "sweet blood," we've got a few tips to help you avoid mosquito bites.

AUGUST 22: NATIONAL TOOTH FAIRY DAY
Got a kiddo with a loose tooth? You're in luck! We were lucky enough to snag an interview with the Tooth Fairy herself!

AUGUST 29: MORE HERBS, LESS SALT DAY
The most successful combination of herbs and spices works to enhance the natural aroma and flavor of the food you’re cooking. Not sure which ones to add to your cupboard? Check out our brief primer on the essential herbs and spices you should have in your cupboard.

Here's a hilarious take on why Americans don't pronounce the "h" in "herb" but Brits do:
