Have you ever wondered what the Olympic Rings represent? Pierre de Coubertin created the Olympic Rings symbol in 1913 using five rings to represent the five continents participating in the Olympics. The colors — red, blue, yellow, black, and green — combined with the white background represented the flags of all the nations participating at that time.
Here is an art project inspired by the rings that is so simple but beautiful enough to proudly hang on the wall.
What You Need:
- Canvas
- Washable Paint
- Paper Plates
- Small Cups
- Optional: Painter's Smock (many local hardware stores have them for free)
- Optional: Toilet Paper Rolls
PRO TIP: Paint can be messy. Our favorite places to paint are in the kitchen or bathroom. It's much easier to wash off linoleum or tile than it is to wash off carpet.
What You Do:
Spread out the paper plates and put one color of paint on each plate. You can use the five colors mentioned above, or substitute your favorite colors.
Using one cup per paint color, use the rim of your cup as a stamper to make rings on your canvas. Make sure to spread the paint on the entire rim of your cup for full effect.
Spread the rings out so they aren't touching at all, and then overlap some. Which design do you like best?

Optional: Now try the toilet paper rolls in place of the cups. Are the cup circles bigger or smaller than the toilet paper roll circles? Is it easier to keep the shape?
