By Sarah Hauge, Publisher, Macaroni KID, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Centennial April 11, 2022

Rabbits are more than just nature's cute, cuddly creations. In cultures across the globe, rabbits can symbolize a variety of traits — both good and bad.

Luck, abundance, and wealth are positive qualities typically associated with rabbits. Alternatively, rabbits can often be depicted as tricksters.

Hop to it! Here are five fun rabbit-themed things to teach your kids this week.

1. A silly joke.

Here's an earresistible rabbit joke that I am hop-timistic you will enjoy:

How does the Easter Bunny stay fit? Eggsercise and hareobics.

2. A new vocabulary word.

Contrary to popular belief, "bunny" is not the correct term for a baby rabbit. A baby rabbit is actually a kitten!

Have you ever seen a group of rabbits? Common terms for a group of rabbits include colony, herd, and fluffle. Fluffle is used primarily in Northern Canada, but I think it has a nice ring to it.

3. A word puzzle.

What do you get when you cross geometry and winter sports? The answer to this week's rebus!

To solve a rebus, consider not just the words, but the placement, size, color, and quantity of everything within the box (and sometimes just outside the box!) when trying to decipher the puzzle.

What is a bunny slope? A bunny slope is a gentle ski hill. It's a great place for a beginner to practice skiing.

4. A fun fact.

Like a centaur, griffin, and minotaur, jackalopes are hybrid mythical creatures.

The legend of the jackalope began in Douglas, Wyoming in 1934. Today, the small town honors its beloved prankster creature with the world's largest jackalope statue and jackalope hunting licenses available for one day of the year only... June 31st.

Don't be fooled! The jackalope is a symbol of trickster behaviors. If you're thinking about heading to Douglas, Wyoming for jackalope hunting next June, you'll be disappointed. Like the jackalope, June 31st doesn't exist!

5. Teach a personal discovery.

Rabbits are considered to be a sign of good luck in many cultures across the globe. Some people even believe that saying "rabbit rabbit rabbit" on the first of every month will bring luck in the days ahead. Does it work? It can't hurt to try!

Do you have a good luck charm? From rabbits to acorns, elephants to four-leaf clovers, there are many symbols throughout history that have helped people feel lucky.
