Did You Know? 5 School-Themed Things for Kids to Learn this Week

By Sarah Hauge, Macaroni KID Englewood-Greenwood Village-Centennial Publisher August 7, 2022

It's officially back-to-school season, and my house is bursting with excitement for a brand new school year. From math to science, reading to history, there's so much learning that takes place in a school classroom.

Continue the learning at home with our five school-themed things to teach your kids this week.

1. A silly joke.

This fun joke deserves an A+.

Why doesn't the sun have to go to school? It already has thousands of degrees.

2. A new vocabulary word.

Hey kids! Which level of the school system are you in this year?

The US education system is structured in three components: primary school, secondary school, and tertiary education.

  • Primary school, also known as elementary school, includes grades from kindergarten through 5th or 6th grade.
  • Secondary school includes middle and high school education.
  • Tertiary education refers to all formal education after high school, such as college or university, technical training institutes, and vocational schools.

3. A word puzzle.

To solve a rebus, consider not just the words but the placement, size, color, and quantity of everything within the box (and sometimes just outside the box!) when trying to decipher the puzzle.

4. A fun fact.

Have you ever used an entire pencil? Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I ever have.

How long do pencils last? The average pencil contains enough graphite to write approximately 45,000 words. In theory, you could write The Great Gatsby in its entirety with just one pencil.

Can't find your eraser? Not all is lost! Before the invention of the eraser, writers used bread to correct their mistakes.

5. Teach a personal discovery.

My son wants to know: does recess count as a school subject? 😂

What's your favorite school subject? According to a 2020 study by topuniversities.com, the top three most viewed university subjects were heavily math-oriented.

First place went to computer science and information systems, followed by engineering and technology. The third most viewed subject was business and management studies.
