🎬 2024 Blockbusters, Must-See Movies, and Family Films

This year is bringing superheroes and antiheroes, spinoffs, reboots, and sequels galore — including several very belated ones. Here are the movies coming out this year that we think you'll want to add to your To-Be-Watched list. 

JANUARY 12: Mean Girls (Comedy | PG-13) I felt pretty old when I saw a trailer that said, "Not your mom's Mean Girls!" But, like the stage show, it's a fun song-and-dance twist on the modern classic about the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.

FEBRUARY 2: Argylle (Action | PG-13) An introverted spy novelist (Sofia Boutella) gets caught up in a real-life tale of espionage. With a cast that also includes Henry Cavill, Samuel L. Jackson, Catherine O'Hara, Bryan Cranston, John Cena, and Dua Lipa, this funny, sexy, and action-packed film is near the top of my must-see list.

FEBRUARY 9: Lisa Frankenstein (Horror-Comedy | PG-13) If you like your love stories served with a side of murderous zombies, this rom-com with a very dark side will leave you satisfied. It's written by Diablo Cody and is the directorial debut of Zelda Williams (daughter of Robin Williams), so I'm intrigued.

FEBRUARY 14: Bob Marley: One Love (Biopic | PG-13) Take a closer look at the life of legendary reggae musician Bob Marley (played by Kingsley Ben-Adir), who tried to carry a message of peace to a country in the midst of chaos and war. He is a musical icon, and I can't wait to learn more about his story.

FEBRUARY 14: Madame Web (Superhero Action | PG-13) If you aren't all caught up on all the superhero movies, no worries... this one is a stand-alone origin story about Madame Web (Dakota Johnson), a clairvoyant mutant who is connected to three younger women and also someone who looks like Spider-Man's evil twin.

FEBRUARY 23: Drive-Away Dolls (Action-Comedy | R) Ethan Coen wrote and directed this quirky comedy about two friends who take a road trip to Tallahassee. Things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals.

MARCH 1: Dune: Part Two (Action-Adventure | PG-13): The first was breathtakingly beautiful. The highly-anticipated second chapter of the sci-fi epic based on the popular book picks up where the first left off. Although this will complete the story, director Denis Villeneuve has indicated he may plan to expand the saga.

MARCH 8: Kung Fu Panda 4 (Animated Comedy | PG) It's been almost a decade since the last KFP movie, and my whole family is THRILLED that Jack Black is returning as Po, the Dragon Warrior, for the fourth installment of the series. Destiny is calling once again; this time, he's tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace! 

March 21: Road House (Action | R) Jake Gyllenhaal is RIPPED! In this remake of the 1989 classic starring Patrick Swayze, Gyllenhaal plays a UFC fighter-turned-bouncer who's kicking butt and taking names.

MARCH 22: Arthur the King (Adventure | PG-13) Based on a true story, a competitive adventure racer (Mark Wahlberg) takes in a stray dog during an endurance race. Together, they travel over 400 miles in 10 days to form one unbreakable bond. Yup, I'm pretty sure I'll need a box of tissues for this one.

MARCH 29: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (Adventure-Comedy | PG-13) Ghostbusters: Afterlife came more than three decades after the original movie. Now, the story continues when some of the old Ghostbusters — including Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) — join with the new to fight a new evil force.

MARCH 29: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (Sci-Fi Adventure | PG-13) The Monsterverse continues to expand. The mighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla must battle against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence —and our own.

APRIL 12: Civil War (Action | R) Given the current political climate, this one almost feels like a prescient warning. It's described as "a race to the White House in a near future America balanced on the razor's edge."

MAY 3: The Fall Guy (Action-Comedy | PG-13) Inspired by the hit TV series from the '80s, Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is a stuntman who left the movie industry to focus on his physical and mental health but returns to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy, and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job.

MAY 10: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (Sci-Fi Action | PG-13) Did you realize that this is the fourth movie in the reboot of the series? Me either. Like the classic from 1968, apes are now in charge.

MAY 17: Back to Black (Biopic | R) The incredibly talented Amy Winehouse (played by Marisa Abela) was an overnight sensation with a tragic ending. This biopic about her rise to fame and the release of her studio album, Back to Black, has the blessing of Winehouse's estate.

MAY 17: IF (Comedy | TBD) A girl discovers she can see everyone's Imaginary Friends and embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids. It looks so funny and different and has an incredible cast. Count me in!

MAY 24: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Sci-Fi Action/Adventure | TBD) The fifth movie in the series tells the origin story of renegade warrior Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) before she teamed up with Mad Max.

MAY 24: The Garfield Movie (Animated Comedy | PG) The lasagna-loving, cynical, lazy orange tabby (voiced by Chris Pratt) makes his way from the comics section to the big screen. Garfield and his canine companion Odie (voiced by Harvey Guillén) leave their pamperd life to join Vic, Garfield's dad (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson!), on a high-stakes heist.

MAY 31: Summer Camp (Comedy | PG-13) Nora (Diane Keaton), Ginny (Kathy Bates), and Mary (Alfre Woodard) have been best friends since being inseparable at summer camp. As the years have passed, they’ve seen each other less and less, so when the chance to reunite for a summer camp reunion arises. Their lives might not be where they’d imagined, but one thing is for sure — they still need each other, and summer camp reminds them why.

JUNE 7: Bad Boys: Ride or Die (Action-Comedy | TBD) Nearly 30 years after the original, Miami cops and best friends Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are back for more jokes in between chasing the bad guys.

JUNE 14: Inside Out 2 (Animated Comedy | TBD) Let's hear it for Pixar! The original Inside Out won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, so I have high expectations. Riley is now a teenager, and a new emotion has arrived to join Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. It's time to meet: Anxiety. 

JUNE 21: The Bikeriders (Drama | R) The acclaimed Telluride Film Festival favorite follows the rise of a motorcycle club, the Vandals. Seen through the lives of its members, the club evolves from a gathering place for local outsiders into a more sinister gang, threatening the original group's unique way of life. It's been referred to as "the Godfather of biker movies."

JUNE 28: Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (Western | R) If you love Yellowstone, you'll want to add this two-part Western starring Kevin Costner to your TBW list. And you won't have to wait a year or two for the conclusion; Chapter 2 is expected in August.

JUNE 28: A Quiet Place: Day One (Sci-Fi Horror | TBD) It's the third movie in the series but the first one in the timeline. Set in New York City on the first day of the alien invasion, the prequel to John Krasinski's A Quiet Place will (hopefully) show us exactly what happened.

JULY 5: Despicable Me 4 (Animated Comedy | PG) Gru, the world's favorite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League agent, returns for an exciting, bold new era of Minions mayhem. Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, and the family is forced to go on the run.

JULY 12: Fly Me to the Moon (Rom-Com | TBD) Brought in to fix NASA’s public image, sparks fly in all directions as marketing maven Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) wreaks havoc on launch director Cole Davis’s (Channing Tatum) already difficult task of the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is directed to stage a fake moon landing as backup, and the countdown truly begins.

JULY 19: Twisters (Action | TBD) It's another belated sequel, this one about tornado chasers. Twister came out in 1996, so maybe these are all the kids of the original crew?

JULY 26: Deadpool & Wolverine (Action-Comedy | TBD) The only Marvel movie scheduled for a 2024 release brings together Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Do we know anything about the plot? Nope. Are we already planning to see it anyway? Of course!

AUGUST 2: Harold and the Purple Crayon (Adventure-Comedy | PG) Inspired by the 1955 picture book by Crockett Johnson, adventurous Harold can still make anything come to life simply by drawing it — even as an adult. Enter a world where imagination comes to life!

AUGUST 9: Borderlands (Action-Comedy | TBD) I'm not usually interested in movies based on video games, but this one has a cast that includes Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Kevin Hart.

AUGUST 16: Alien: Romulus (Sci-Fi Horror | TBD) Set between the original from 1979 and its 1986 sequel, this stand-alone sci-fi thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

AUGUST 16: Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 (Western | R): This is a continuation of the story that came out in June.

AUGUST 23: Blink Twice (Thriller | TBD): When tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at his fundraising gala, sparks fly. He whisks her away on a dream vacation to his private island, but as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. She’ll have to uncover the truth if she wants to make it out of this party alive.

SEPTEMBER 6: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Horror-Comedy | TBD) On the heels of a successful stage show comes another belated sequel. Michael Keaton returns nearly 40 years later as "the ghost with the most." Catherine O'Hara and Winona Ryder reprise their mother-daughter roles, and Jenny Ortega joins the cast as the youngest member of the Deetz family.

SEPTEMBER 20: Transformers One (Animated Action | TBD) If the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles can find success with a younger generation via an animated movie, maybe Transformers will too. The fully CG-animated movie tells the origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, known as sworn enemies but who were once friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever.

SEPTEMBER 20: The Wild Robot (Animated Drama | TBD) From DreamWorks Animation comes a new adaptation of Peter Brown's beloved award-winning bestseller. The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot — ROZZUM unit 7134, "Roz" for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.

SEPTEMBER 20: Wolfs (Action-Comedy | TBD) George Clooney and Brad Pitt together again? Please and thank you! With more chemistry than most Hollywood couples, I'll watch just about any movie starring these two. This one is about two lone wolfs (wolves?) assigned to the same job.

OCTOBER 4: Joker: Folie à Deux (Drama | R) Joaquin Phoenix earned an Oscar for portraying the title character in the 2019 movie. Now, Lady Gaga joins the cast as his girlfriend, Harley Quinn. And here's a twist for you — it's said to be a musical!

OCTOBER 25: Venom: The Last Dance (Action | TBD) Tom Hardy returns for the third time as everyone's favorite antihero.

NOVEMBER 15: Red One (Action-Comedy | TBD) After a villain kidnaps Santa from the North Pole, an E.L.F (Extremely Large and Formidable) operative must partner with the world's most accomplished tracker to find Santa and save Christmas. In 2023, Dwayne Johnson posted the following on Instagram: "Think JUMANJI meets MIRACLE ON 34TH ST meets HOBBS & SHAW with a dash of HARRY POTTER and sprinkled on top with my all-time favorite Christmas movie, ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE… let all that sink in."

NOVEMBER 22: Gladiator 2 (Action | TBD) The long-awaited sequel to the 2000 Oscar-winning movie stars Paul Mescal as Lucius Verus, the now-grown son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus. Will we not be entertained?!

NOVEMBER 27: Wicked (Fantasy | TBD) A different perspective of the Wizard of Oz has become a Broadway favorite. The popular musical will hit the Big Screen in time for some pre- or post-Thanksgiving dinner fun. Alas, it's a two-parter, and the second one isn't expected until late 2025.

DECEMBER 13: The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (Animated Action | TBD) Set hundreds of years before the beloved trilogy, the description includes words like "blood-soaked," so this animated feature does not seem intended for kids.

DECEMBER 13: Untitled Karate Kid movie (Action | TBD) The plot is under wraps, but I'm still looking forward to seeing Ralph Macchio from the originals and Jackie Chan from the remake with Jaden Smith come together.

DECEMBER 20: Mufasa: The Lion King (Adventure | TBD) Hakuna matata! In this live-action prequel to The Lion King, we'll learn the story of Mufasa, Simba's dad, and how he became the King of the Jungle.

DECEMBER 20: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Adventure-Comedy | TBD) The plot is unknown, but the release is expected for the busy holiday season.

DECEMBER 25: Nosferatu (Horror | TBD) What says Christmas spirit more than a blood-sucking vampire? The second remake of the 1922 silent film features Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe.

JANUARY: Mickey 17 (Sci-Fi Adventure | TBD) Adapted from the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, James Pattinson stars as Mickey, a space explorer who gets cloned with his memories intact every time he dies.

MARCH: Alto Knights (Drama | R) Based on the true story of two Mafia bosses from the 1950s: Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. Interestingly, Robert De Niro is said to be playing BOTH roles in the movie.
