Make a Difference: Volunteer with the Colorado Gerontological Society

October 9, 2024

Odds are that there are older adults in your life. Did you know that the older community is often underserved?

The Colorado Gerontological Society (CGS) hopes to raise awareness about the challenges faced by older adults in our state. This initiative supports programs designed to enrich the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of older adults in Colorado, promoting independence and enhancing quality of life.

For decades, CGS has been at the forefront of providing essential services, shaping public policy, and fostering education within the field of aging. CGS is calling on community leaders, donors, elder care providers, and compassionate individuals to support this campaign.

Every contribution directly supports these essential services, ensuring older adults have access to the support they need to lead empowered, connected lives. Harvesting Purpose This Autumn supports the following programs:

  • Hearing Enhancement: CGS assists adults aged 60 and above with hearing aids and ear molds, covering these costs directly with providers. This program improves communication and quality of life, helping older adults stay engaged in their communities.
  • Vision Support: CGS helps older adults access prescription eyeglasses, covering costs for eye exams and, if needed, frames and lenses. This support ensures a clear vision for daily life, enhancing confidence and independence.
  • Mental Health Counseling: CGS provides vital mental health counseling with trained professionals for older adults, addressing challenges like depression, anxiety and isolation. This offering helps older adults manage emotional struggles, maintain their independence, and regain dignity and hope.
  • Telephone Buddies: This program connects older adults with compassionate volunteers who provide companionship and weekly check-ins. Through friendly conversations, Telephone Buddies combat feelings of isolation, fostering meaningful human connections that enrich lives on both ends of the line.

“Our commitment to upholding the highest standards ensures that older adults in Colorado receive the care, support and resources they need to lead vibrant lives,” said Eileen Doherty, MS, Executive Director of CGS. "We invite the community to stand with us as we work toward a brighter future for the aging population."

Volunteer to help Colorado seniors

Every year hundreds of individuals volunteer with the Colorado Gerontological Society to help those most in need. Corporations and professionals often choose CGS to partner with for service days or through special projects.

Many volunteer opportunities have flexible time commitments and are large group or family-friendly. As a registered non-profit, CGS is a great place for families to help children and young adults learn about community service.

Service Volunteers

Individuals can participate in regularly scheduled volunteer opportunities that include one-time opportunities or more long-term opportunities.

Volunteer opportunities include:

Technical Assistance and Support

Volunteers often bring technical support and expertise such as program planning, business analyst services, computer skills, IT skills, accounting, communications, and social media. These skills provide support and product management to the many projects and services offered by The Society.

Internships

The Society periodically accepts undergraduate and graduate level interns from a variety of fields, including Social Work, Sociology, Public Policy, Public Administration, Counseling, Non-Profit Management and others. If you are interested in an internship position, please contact us to arrange an interview.

Donated Services

Finally, if you are a licensed dentist, optometrist, or hearing aid dispenser, we urge you to become involved with our vision, hearing and dental programs that use your discounted services, donated time, and talent to leverage thousands of dollars of additional assistance.
