Meet the Macaroni KITties!

We love cats and celebrate our cats everyday! Did you know that there are two National Cat Days in October?  National Black Cat Day on October 27th and National Cat Day on October 29th!  Here's what we found out about both days and an introduction to our crazy cats!

National Black Cat Day is celebrated on October 27th to bring awareness to the fact that black cats are adopted at a much lower rate than other cats and to change the bad reputation they have.

Black Cat Facts:

  • They are just as loveable and loving as other cats!
  • They tend to be overlooked in shelters because of superstitions. One of the most popular and oldest – that a black cat crossing your path will bring you bad luck.
  • Because of the superstitions many shelters and rescues will put a hold on adoptions around Halloween.
  • There are ALWAYS black cats available for adoption.
  • Their fur is less visible on your clothing than lighter cats.
  • Black cats are more genetically predisposed to be male than female.
  • The Cat Fancier’s Association recognizes 22 breeds of cats that allow for solid black coats.
  • United Kingdom, Germany, France, China, and Japan all believe that black cats bring you luck!

National Cat Day is celebrated on October 29th and was created in 2005 to bring awareness to the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and the importance of spaying and neutering cats.

Fun Cat Facts (including our black cat friends):

  • House cats share 95.6% of their genetic makeup with tigers.
  • They can jump 5-6 times their height.
  • Cats are thieves! They will grab objects like stuffed animals, feather dusters, and other things that remind them of prey.
  • Cats sleep 13-16 hours a day.
  • Cats that look like they have thumbs are called polydactyl.
  • Cats have up to 100 different vocalizations — dogs only have 10.
  • Calico cats are more genetically predisposed to be female, while black cats and orange tabbies tend to more genetically predisposed to be male.
  • Cats are lactose intolerant! Who knew!?

Meet Our Macaroni KITties

CHARLIE

Age: 7 years old

Favorite thing to do: Cuddle up like a baby or with her head on your arm.

Quirk: Charlie likes to stalk her brother and then scream and act like he started it. She is also allergic to anesthesia.

Owner: The Reiner Family

Charlie is our resident, on-demand, flying bug catcher. She can catch a fly middair and will come running if you need her assistance. Her sixth sense is that she can hear us coming from a mile away and will jump up to meet us at the door. Charlie knows exactly when it is dinner or treat time and she will follow us around yelling if they are late. She pretends that she is very regal but she loves to play.

We adopted Charlie and her brother Finn from LOLA's Rescue Adoptable Felines on Christmas Eve, and they were a surprise on Christmas morning.

FINN

Age: 7 years old

Favorite thing to do: Lay on my lap late at night.

Quirk: He likes to lay on his back and is pretty much scared of everything.

Owner: The Reiner Family

Finn likes to howl to get his way, play with crickets, and throw fresh green beans in the air. He can detect thunder long before we hear it, and he can catch a treat in midair with his paw. He loves to chase his sister, Charlie.

We adopted Finn from LOLA's Rescue Adoptable Felines.

GREMLIN

Age: 4 or 5 years old. Celebrating his birthday today, October 24th

Favorite thing to do: EAT FOOD and play in water

Quirk: When he drinks water, he manages to get it ALL over his face

Owner: A. Reiner

Gremlin is a drama king and a personal shadow. He coughs to let everyone know he's working on a hairball, and a favorite pastime is tripping his human roomies. His favorite off limit foods are Taco Bell, chicken nuggets, and ice cream, and he will pull your hand down mid-bite to steal it. He doesn't like to be held, but he does love a good chin scratch!

Gremlin was adopted from an ad. The previous owners found out that their son was too allergic to cats so they were looking to rehome him. I reached out out of curiosity and ended up taking him home later that day!

JOEY

Age: 9 years old

Favorite thing to do: Lay on the comforters on all of our beds.

Quirk: Wants to be around people but does NOT want you to touch him (non family members that is)

Owner: The Marketos Family

Joey is ALWAYS hungry, loves to drink from the bathroom sink, carry toys around the house, and has to be medicated to go to the vet.  He loves playing with Sylvee but if we notice he will start hissing as if he hates it!  He loves a good head scratch and being brushed but absolutely hates being picked up!

We adopted Joey from a rescue via PETCO

SYLVEE

Age: 1.5 years old

Favorite thing to do: Climb on EVERYTHING!

Quirk: She walks around meowing looking for us and her meow sounds like she's saying "Hello?"

Owner: The Marketos Family

Sylvee was suppose to be an Orange cat!  My husband said he would agree to another cat if we got an orange one but she stole our hearts! She is an FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) survivor and has tons of kitten energy!  She loves to talk, play with toys, catch bugs, chase and tackle Joey, watch tv, steal people food, and bite the corners of electronics!  She actually broke the screen on one of our phones by biting the corner!

We adopted Sylee from Soul Dog Rescue via PetSmart
