Camp Backcountry is the spot for a build-a-fort, hike-just-to-explore, and don’t-forget-your-binoculars kind of summer for your kids. The Camp Backcountry Base Camp is nestled into our 8,200-acre wildlife conservation property just south of C-470 on Santa Fe Drive.
As campers grow with us each summer, so do their adventures. Nature Camps mix learning about ecosystems with traditional camp games and adventures. Expedition Camps include bigger hikes, overnight campouts, and excursions like rock climbing and paddleboarding. Camp Backcountry is also the spot for youth with specific interests like art and horseback riding.
If you have a teen, check out our Leader-in-Training program — a multi-week mentorship program that gives students training and real-life experiences, while earning volunteer service hours.
No matter which session fits your kid, we want them to leave Camp Backcountry with a passion for the outdoors that drives them to want to protect and conserve it for generations to come, just as much as they want to escape to the mountains and forests to play.
Nature Camps – Wild and Free, Living off the Land, Jurassic Adventures, Wilderness Survival, Amazing Animal Architects, Mysteries of the Backcountry, Camouflage Craze, Messy Science, Lost!, Hunter or Hunted (Ages 7-13): Base Camp is just the beginning for our Nature Campers! Whether it’s their first introduction to the outdoors or they are a certified wild child, our Nature Camp sessions give campers opportunities to hike, build, create, explore, and adventure… all in the fresh summer air.
Horse Camps – Western Palooza, English Riders, Trail Blazers, Horsin' Around, Ranch Adventures (Ages 7-13): Let your kid live the ranch life. Campers will find themselves immersed in learning about the equine species, riding in the arena and on trails, and spending their days on adventures at the Horse Corrals. Horse camp veterans and first-timers alike will be lassoed into a summer that they'll never forget.
Art Camps – A Brush with Nature, Wild About Color, Crafty Creations (Ages 7-13): Everyone sees nature’s beauty through their own lens. Now your artist (no experience needed) can turn their vision into a work of art using all kinds of mediums from painting to sculpture to metalwork and more. Excursions to unique Backcountry destinations will provide access to the perfect outdoor studio.
Leader-in-Training Program (Ages 14-17): The Leader in Training (LIT) Program is a mentorship program for high school-aged campers that focuses on leadership development and prepares them for future jobs, whether as a counselor at Camp Backcountry or elsewhere. This program gives students training, mentorship, and real-life experiences to sharpen their organization, social, and responsibility skills, all while earning volunteer service hours. In order to be considered for this program, LITs must send a letter of interest to the Camp Director.
