Big outdoor adventures, close to home!

Nestled into 8,200 acres of wildlife conservation property just south of C-470 on Santa Fe Drive, Camp Backcountry is the spot for a build-a-fort, hike-just-to-explore, and don't-forget-your-binoculars kind of summer for your kids.

We believe that children learn, grow, and thrive best when outdoors and immersed in nature. Our week-long, full-day outdoor camps support the needs of children by using a whole-child, experiential learning approach.

Our goal is to nurture their hearts and minds while strengthening their connection to and understanding of the natural world. Camp Backcountry is more than just a place to spend your summer. It’s an experience that becomes part of who each child is.

If you have a teen, check out our Leader-in-Training program — a multi-week mentorship program that gives students training and real-life experiences while earning volunteer service hours.

Camp Descriptions

Nature Camps (Ages 7-13): Our week-long nature camps provide kids with an unparalleled opportunity to play and explore outdoors, all while nurturing children’s wildly curious minds and instilling a love for nature. Each session includes traditional camp activities and outdoor adventures, with a different underlying science theme each week.

Horse Camps (Ages 7-13):  Our week-long horse camps provide an opportunity for kids to learn about horses from the ground up. Campers will immerse themselves in learning about the equine species through groundwork, animal science, hands-on activities, games, group riding lessons, and a trail ride!

Art Camps (Ages 7-13): As a blend of both an art camp and a nature camp, we give art making a new meaning. There are no “cookie-cutter” projects here. We introduce campers to a wide range of materials and techniques and unleash their creativity and imagination to build new skills, all while spending time outside in the wild. Each session includes traditional camp activities and outdoor adventures, along with creating a unique take-home art project each day.

Girls of the Outdoors Camp (Ages 7-13): Our week-long all-girls camps are a one-of-a-kind experience. We will come together to explore, learn, and thrive in the great outdoors. Our all-girls camp is designed to provide a unique and empowering experience, fostering self-confidence, teamwork, and a deep connection with nature. We love to grow empowered women of the outdoors, and that starts with you!

Leader-in-Training Program (Ages 14-17): The Leader-in-Training (LIT) Program is a mentorship program for high school students that focuses on leadership development and prepares them for future jobs, whether as a counselor at Camp Backcountry or elsewhere. This program gives students training, mentorship, and real-life experiences to sharpen their organization, social, and responsibility skills, all while earning volunteer service hours.
