Craft Corner: Peppermint Candy Ornaments

🎄 Cool Craft for Christmas

By Julie Dikken, Macaroni Kid Evergreen, Bailey, & Conifer Publisher December 22, 2015

These ornaments are super easy to make. The trick to the clean, rounded edges is to cut them into shapes after the candy cools a bit. Leftover pieces of candy can be crushed and used to make peppermint bark or to add to hot cocoa!

What You Need:

  • "Starlight" peppermint candies
  • Cookie sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicon cookie sheet liners
  • Cookie cutters
  • Toothpick or wooden skewer
  • Ribbon

What You Do:

1.) Preheat oven to 350℉.

2.) Remove candies from wrappers.

3.) Place candies on a parchment-covered cookie sheet in the shape of the cutter you will use. I used hearts and candy cane-shaped cookie cutters.

4.) Place the cookie sheet in the oven. Bake for 5-9 minutes, but watch closely. Candies are ready when melted but not bubbling.

5.) Remove from oven and let cool for about 3 minutes. **Caution! Melted candy is very HOT** Candies will continue to smooth out after being removed from the oven.

6.) Place a cookie cutter on slightly cooled melted candy and cut through. Use a toothpick or wooden skewer to make a hole for the string. Leave cookie cutter and toothpick in place until the candy is completely cool and hardened.

7.) Once hardened, remove pieces of candy from the outside of the cookie cutter. Carefully remove the candy ornament from the cookie cutter.

8.) Tie ribbon to hang.
